If you're like me, you love kale and you love Brussel sprouts. Now, just imagine if they were combined into one vegetable. It has happened. Welcome to the Kalette. A Kalette is a cross between kale and a Brussel sprout. It is a new vegetable on the market and it's delicious. It's not only healthy and packed with vitamins, but it has a sweet and nutty flavor. It's also easier to prep than kale. I've been waiting for it to hit the market since I read about it last winter. I was very happy to finally see it this week at our local grocery store, Hansen Foods.
Here's a few ways that I've prepared them over the last few days.
Here's regular kale and Brussel sprouts -
And here's their love child...meet my friend, Kalette.
I love the great purple and green color combination on these beautiful vegetables.
Kalette's add 120% of your daily Vitamin K and 40% of Vitamin C per 85 grams, or 1 1/2 cups. They are 45 calories per serving ( 1 1/2 cups)
To prepare, rinse the Kalettes and trim off the ends.
Saute some orange and red bell peppers with olive oil, salt and pepper over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Next, add your washed and trimmed Kalettes and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes.
Remove from heat and transfer to a plate. Toss them with some pomegranate red wine vinegar and enjoy!
Another idea is to roast your Kalettes with some soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, ginger, garlic, salt and pepper. Roast for 10-12 minutes at 425 degrees. Top with pepitas.
But I must say that grilling them has been my favorite, thus far. Here I have grilled them with some Ribeye steaks. I prepped the Kalettes by rinsing them and trimming off the ends, then tossing them with some toasted sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and black sea salt. I grilled them at medium high heat for 5-6 minutes, turning frequently and the flavor was great.
Delicious!
Delicious!
I've sautéed them, roasted them and grilled them so far and my favorite is grilling them. Next I will add them to casseroles and shred them into salads along with a few other ideas and I will post the results. Go out and get some Kalettes and add them to your Thanksgiving meal. You won't be disappointed.
